The Undercliffe and Brookroyd surgeries occupy this three storey Primary Care Centre, located within the heart of Heckmondwike town centre. Construction was completed in July 2010, following the site’s purchase from Kirklees Council in 2009. The new building has a patient car park for 35 cars as well as a dedicated secure staff parking area. Integral within the building is a 125m2 pharmacy let to Rowlands Pharmacy.

The site was formerly an underused car park and its development has regenerated an important part of the town centre which now offers not just vastly improved health services, but improved park and leisure facilities for the Council.

The building is 1800m2 with each GP practice operating from an independent floor, with the second floor comprising shared staff and administration rooms. In addition, NHS Kirklees operate a range of services from the building.

The underfloor heating system is linked into an air source heat pump which minimises power demand and reduces the carbon footprint of the building.

The building interiors have been designed to provide each practice with their own identity including specific colour palettes, feature lighting and ceiling details in the waiting areas. Externally over the building entrance is a stainless steel sculpture of a cascading roll of carpet reflecting the generations of carpet manufacture in Heckmondwike.

“Throughout the planning and building process we have been impressed by the willingness of Apollo to listen to our requirements and incorporate them whenever possible. The resulting iconic building is of a high quality, a landmark for healthcare in the town, and one which provides an inspiring environment for both staff and patients.”

Dr Jim Lee, Undercliffe Surgery
