In September 2009 Apollo was delighted to hand over the new 1200sqm Brig Royd Surgery to staff and patients of the 6 GP partnership. The site of the new surgery, adjacent to a Conservation Area and offering magnificent views over the Ryburn Valley, was conveniently located opposite the former surgery premses which the practice had occupied for over 30 years. Integrated within the surgery are the services of a local pharmacist. The redevelopment of the site, which is accessed by a new road called 'Hirstwood', taken from links to the historic name for the land and a local benefactor, will be completed with the construction of 12 affordable dwellings.

Many hurdles were overcome to complete this striking natural stone building which benefits from 30 parking spaces. The main internal feature is a stunning double height octagonal shaped waiting area with a glass top light; hanging centrally in this space is a bespoke mobile, commissioned with a grant from the Arts Council England and a donation from Apollo. The artist took inspiration from local school children and senior residents on their reflections of the River Ryburn, and the specific medicinal qualities of plants and flowers.

Brig Royd is a training practice and is now enjoying the benefits of 11 consulting rooms, 2 training rooms and 2 treatment rooms, including a minor operations facility. A steel frame allows the first floor to have raking ceilings and provides accommodation for administration and staff rooms and space allocated for visiting staff from NHS Calderdale.

Continuing Apollo's commitment to environmental and sustainable development the building's underfloor heating is linked to an Air Source Heat Pump which reduces running costs and the carbon footprint of the building, along with many other energy saving features.

The new Surgery, which was constructed by a local building contractor, provides spacious, airy and modern facilities which will enable the Practice to expand their services. With improved access, parking and surroundings a visit to the surgery will be a more pleasurable experience!

“Our dream to have a new surgery finally became a reality. We have enjoyed a good relationship with the Apollo Medical Group who have masterminded the development.”
