Growing volumes of data which are reported remotely from our Eastbourne imaging operation posed significant challenges to the IT infrastructure particularly the low bandwidth of the area. We required a cost effective solution to provide a more efficient web-based image distribution with shortened loading and transfer times.
After consultation with Hicks Associates who supply the Visage CS system, we decided upon this solution to provide a system that is fully scalable (up to thousands of users) with 10 Tbytes of storage. The system provides the speed and efficiencies that we were looking for in a web based picture archiving and communication system (PACS). It is very fast, consistent and provides secure access to patient images both within the centre and remotely. Loading and transfer times to our radiologists have been shortened which in turn have shortened reporting times.
Visage PACS has been designed to carry out DICOM storage and transfer over low bandwidth links by applying a lossless compression algorithm to the data. It utilises sophisticated assignment rules and an advanced queuing system which adaptively measures the bandwidth available and sends the data in a sequential manner. Visage is a leading supplier of 3D rendering systems for CT, MRI and PET/CT. The Visage PACS has an HL7 RIS interface and is an ideal solution for our clinics and treatment centres.
With the introduction of this technology, we can now offer remote access for Consultants and GPs to view their patients' images from the comfort of their surgeries.
