A Sense of Place

New Primary Care premises should be very much community buildings.....

.... and Apollo believe, in order to achieve this, an approach that goes beyond simply “bricks and mortar” is required.  At the new Old Kilpatrick Medical Practice premises, which are nearing completion, we aim to achieve a sense of place by incorporating motifs from the local area graphically within the building signage and interior. The key local references of the Forth and Clyde Canal, which the premises sit beside, and the River Clyde, are picked up in the signage design incorporating representations of the two bodies of water and lock gates.

A series of photographs featuring the river, estuary, canal and local hills are being commissioned and hung in the building.  These will be digitally rendered in sepia tones, complementing the interior design and signage.

The existing premises were completed in 1954 and still retains, albeit not functioning, the original patient call system, which consists of a varnished wooden box with a glass front and electro-mechanical swinging numbers!  This, along with some other selected original items from the existing building, will be removed prior to its demolition and installed as a “montage” in the new building, serving as a reminder of the history and continuity of medical services in Old Kilpatrick.

At the Children’s Play Area, an interactive display illustrating the 39 locks over 35 miles between the River Clyde and the Firth of Forth, will be installed, being both fun and educational.

It is hoped that initiatives like these help to create a sense of the building “belonging” in the community from day one.
