Christmas is the time of year where we tend to think of those who are less fortunate. So this year Apollo have decided that instead of sending out Christmas cards, we would make donations to charities close to our office locations in order to help them continue their hard work over the festive period. We hope we can make a difference to someone in need.

Families in Need (FIND) Ipswich For nearly 30 years, Families in Need (FIND) Ipswich has offered a lifeline to people in Ipswich and the surrounding areas who are experiencing poverty and despair.

Harrogate Homeless Project We’re a team of committed individuals, who want to make sure that homeless people have the strategies, support and services that are needed to begin the difficult journey back to truly independent living.

PEEK, Glasgow We deliver high quality play, creative learning and volunteering programmes to over 1000 kids and young people across 24 disadvantaged communities in Glasgow. We improve their life chances by unlocking their potential and journeying alongside them, as they play, create and thrive

Boomerang Cardiff Boomerang started its journey as a homeless/poverty organisation, helping citizens that live on the streets who still deserve a little dignity, however the journey developed moving in different directions but still keeping its identity with regards to tackling poverty.

The Shrewsbury Ark We provide the basic things that most people take for granted. Our clients can rely on us for warm clothes, bedding, personal items and a hot meal or cup of tea and a chat when they need it. When they are ready, we give them opportunities to build self-confidence and develop their potential.

An extremely informative gathering of Primary Care Direct members took place in Leeds last week. It has been 18 months since the service was successfully launched across the Primary Care market; a service that offers all the business support that a Practice or Federation might require from one organisation.

Apollo is proud to be involved with this exciting group of like-minded professionals and can exclusively offer help and assistance with any property related matter which can be augmented by the support from fellow professionals as required.

The membership of Primary Care Direct is growing and the skills that are available to interested parties are wide ranging from legal and accountancy, through to property, marketing, business writing and much more.

Apollo are delighted to report that the Mountain Ash Primary Care Centre scheme is finally progressing. Appointed in 2013, Apollo made steady progress until the scheme was put on hold while a new funding system was agreed between Welsh Government and Cwm Taf University Health Board. In February of 2018 the funding was approved and the project board re-formed to commence the works. Apollo have secured a site in the centre of Mountain Ash from the Local Council and hope to submit for planning at the beginning of 2019. The scheme brings together all 4 historic practices in the town and will also include several community teams including health visitors and district nurses. The 4 GP practices have now become 2, Rhos House and Cynon Vale and between them look after over 12,000 patients in the region.

Rob James, Apollo’s Managing Director and project lead for developing Mountain Ash said, “We are delighted to be working on Mountain Ash once again and are looking forward to working with the Health Board and Practices to deliver this important centre for the region”. Rob James is based in the Cardiff office and lives only 4 miles from the Mountain Ash scheme site so working locally will make a refreshing change.

Working with Lovel Developments (Yorkshire) Ltd, Apollo is providing development services for a Primary Care Centre in Willerby, near Hull. The project will provide a new building for the Willerby Surgery to enable the Practice to bring together its branch surgery in nearby Swanland and relocate to a new site. The building offers accommodation for the 8,500 patients and the forecast increase to around 11,500 patients following the completion of housing developments in the immediate area.

The project has received support from the East Riding of Yorkshire CCG with the approval of the Outline Business Case; a detailed planning application is due to be lodged shortly with construction planned for early next year.

Richard Drew, Apollo’s Development Director has lead the team, bringing together all the requirements of the project, preparing the OBC and agreeing the financial arrangements with the District Valuer. Local consultation events have been held ahead of the planning process.

Richard Drew said “This project has been a priority for the CCG and the Practice for many years with a number of previous false starts. This time around with the benefit of a site which our client Lovel Developments own and our development experience, we have been able to successfully offer our services and support to the whole team including the CCG and NHSE. The new building will offer the Practice a sustainable and resilient future; something which they are unable to do from their existing two surgery premises.”

Apollo is providing advice to Lovel Developments, whose main area of business is the delivery of land for development, on other potential Primary Care led projects in Yorkshire.

Apollo have been appointed by Primary Health Properties Plc (PHP) as Project Manager and Employers Agent for the triple extension and refurbishment of Milton Keynes Village Practice. Milton Keynes is seeing considerable housing growth and the local facilities are in need of extending and refurbishing to bring them up to current standards. Apollo have led the design team of BRP Architects, Expedite, Rossi Long and PDS in developing a strategy to add almost 40% additional floor area. The works include the creation of a state of the art minor procedures suite along with 8 new consulting rooms. The building will be capable of taking up to 18,000 patients upon completion which is due in November 2018.

Rob James who has been leading this scheme for PHP said “this scheme has been challenging due to the tight boundary and multiple phases. We have appointed Edgar Taylor to build the scheme and they are working closely with the design team and the practice to ensure the surgery remains fully operational during the works”.

Works commenced in January 2018 and are due to complete on 2nd Nov.

It is hard to believe that Apollo’s Multi Agency PPP Joint Venture, hub West Scotland (hWS) has been in operation for five years.

This year the Annual Report, which can be viewed under, celebrates the significant quality of buildings and economic impact we have achieved by working in partnership during this relatively short period of time.

Delivering now over £400M worth of new (including £140m of multi award winning health & care) facilities for our local communities is an outstanding achievement and an important investment in the West of Scotland. It is impressive that, during a period of significant financial challenge, the public sector has invested in health and care centres, community buildings and new schools replacing out-dated parts of its estate, transforming how it delivers and improves services to the public. Estates have been rationalised and agile working, once a new phenomenon, now feels common-place.

In preparation for the next chapter hWS has recently refreshed its supply chain. New members have been invited to join and existing members, who have demonstrated a clear commitment to partnering, have been retained. hWS is excited by the potential to continue to provide a fast and efficient development and commercial management service, extend our involvement in education and early years provision and offer Participants an innovative and highly competitive solution to the social housing challenge.

At the same time hWS continue to promote involvement with Participants at a strategic level, assisting them in longer-term asset planning and the development of models to address service and financial challenges that they face.

hWS are both proud to have been involved in the investment and quality of projects delivered in our local areas and look forward to adding to the many successes and award-winning projects completed to date.

These successes demonstrate strong foundations for further strengthening the West Territory Partnership. hWS are excited by the opportunity to build a more strategic relationship with Participants, develop a stronger understanding of challenges and act proactively to offer solutions, improve value for money and deliver improved services within reducing budgets.

Early engagement creates the greatest opportunity to add value hence we encourage Participants to invite hub West Scotland to contribute to the development and delivery of Estate Strategies.

Further benefits will be delivered evolving from the commissioning of individual projects to a programme approach – this would fully exploit the advantages and capabilities of the Partnership, realise collaboration opportunities and provide maximum certainty over affordability and programme targets.

Following submission of planning in October 2017, Apollo have finally received full planning and conservation area consent for the new Llanbradach Primary Care Centre. This 750sqm facility will replace and enhance the services currently delivered in the town and provide security of service for the coming years. The planning consent came with its challenges with the site being in a conservation area and the current building and site being inhabited by protected species. Apollo has worked alongside Acer Ecology and the Local Authority to ensure the protection of the slow worms and the bats that were resident on the site. The new scheme will include measures to enhance the environment for future wildlife.

Site works are due to start in August 2018 with a completion anticipated for mid 2019. Rob James, Apollo’s Managing Director and project lead for Llanbradach commented “getting this scheme through the planning process has been very challenging with the conservation area status of the site along with the protected wildlife resident in the building and site area. We have worked with several specialist consultants to ensure the planners and local members had all the information to hand to make the decision and approve this scheme. We very much look forward to delivering this great scheme for the Village Practice, the Aber Practice and the local community of Llanbradach.

Working within an existing Health Centre poses its own unique challenges and relies upon the Contractor and Professional Team to coordinate with the Building Users. Three construction phases later, saw the last section of the Works returned to the South Queensferry Medical Practice for their use, on 1st February 2018.

Without adding a single extension, the clinical space increased by 5 Rooms, along with a new access WC and 2 other WCs for Patients and Staff; a large records archive store; and a larger open plan Admin Office. Space planning by the Architect DKB Douglas Associates made efficient use of the existing spaces. Cleverly moving existing functions within the Building like a Rubik’s puzzle to create space; infilling under-used space; and, repositioning structural walls to more evenly distribute space. Just like its spectacular view of the three South Queensferry Bridges, the re-modelling bridged the gap to form new rooms.

With ever increasing house building within the South Queensferry area and general pressures upon practices within the immediate areas of Edinburgh; demand has been placed upon the South Queensferry Practice to increase their patient list. The new clinical accommodation and larger admin space will facilitate provision of better and increased services for the local community of Edinburgh.

The re-modelling of the South Queensferry Medical Practice while occupied, demonstrates Apollo’s versatility to collaborate on varying scales and complexity; from a 6,732m2 new-build Health and Care Centre for a Scottish hub: to a modest scale remodelling of a live facility on behalf a listed institutional investor.
